August 09

A (bike) stitch in time...

During August, 4 of us gathered in a back yard to do a little bike maintenance, just sharing the skills and knowledge we'd gleaned over the miles, the punctures, the tweaks, the disasters and the trouble free riding of the past.

This was the second time we've done this and it's pretty useful and nice to meet 'off the bikes'. If anyone is interested in this kind of thing, get in touch or post your ideas to http://groups.google.co.uk/group/airevalleybikebus

Now where did they get that idea?

Cycle Fridays are a great innovation from Transport for London. It's bit like what we're doing, but also a bit different. Trained cycle leaders guide groups of riders into London on set routes. We've got a few more linkspasted up at:

Darwin in Bradford

Those of us that finish the morning ride in Centenary Square, were treated to the sight of a massive Darwin, sculpted from sand. It was really interesting to see it, ahem, evolve over a couple of weeks. Steve managed to get a snap-shot of it, and post it to the Google Group.

You'd have thought...

...August would be a good time to get on your bike, but the Bike Bus saw a drop in all the key statistics. It's a shame really as the roads were nice and quiet, but when you think about it, people were on holiday, and actually - what better time to drive! It's the one time of the year when car journeys take the 'normal' amount of time. Of course you'd have missed the great weather, the conversation, the exercise, etc, but it's understandable.

Apparently if we all made our commute by alternative means just ONE day a week, we would have holiday traffic levels all the time.

As everyone starts back at work, we expect to see the numbers on the Bike Bus climb again.
